MERVYN ESPIE - Functional Performance and Boxing Coach (FOUNDER)

Following a serious car accident as a child that left me with a broken femur and back injury, I was told I would likely face mobility problems later in life. Refusing to accept those limitations, I turned to exercise and never looked back.

With over 40 years of experience in the health and fitness industry, I specialise in functional performance coaching, helping people move better, become stronger and perform at their best in everyday life, sport and competition. As a boxing coach, I combine technical boxing skills with strength, conditioning and functional movement to develop fitness, confidence and resilience for people of all ages and abilities....

Throughout my career, I have continued to challenge myself by competing in endurance events, including swimming the English Channel, completing a 100-mile ultramarathon, obstacle course racing and other endurance challenges.

I founded a fitness-focused boxing gym and coaching facility in Ballymoney in 2019, creating a welcoming environment where people of all ages and abilities can improve their health, fitness and confidence while learning the skills of boxing.

Today, my coaching philosophy is centred on training smarter, not just harder. As we get older, success comes from maximising recovery as much as effort. I help clients build and maintain strength, muscle and bone density through functional performance training, structured progression and intelligent programming. By prioritising quality movement, effective warm-ups, appropriate recovery and consistent progress, my aim is to help people stay strong, capable and performing at their best for life—not just for today.

My passion is helping people unlock their potential and achieve lasting results, whatever their starting point or age.

Ryan Brolly

I am a second year student at Ulster University studying BSc (HONS) Sport, Physical Activity and Health.Through this sports course it has helped me develop an excellent understanding within how the body functions and what the body needs to function aswell as learning about many different aspects to health. Prior to starting University, I studied my BTECH Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport Development Coaching and Fitness, this course helped me realise how much I really enjoyed coaching so I went on to complete my Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification and my Level 3 Personal Training qualification. I enjoy strength and conditioning type training as this style of training interests me and it is a profession I would like to get into after graduating from University. Functional training is another aspect of training I enjoy within the gym. After 1 year of training with functional coach Mervyn Espie I developed a great understanding of how functional fitness works and the benefits it has on the body. Sport is an area I have been extremely passionate about from a young age. I enjoy both playing and watching sport. Football is the sport that interests me the most.
